About the MESA Initiative
MESA (pronounced “mey-suh”) is a collaborative initiative developed in Renfrew County, Ontario, to better respond to challenges related to homelessness, housing, substance use, addictions, and mental health.
The initiative ensures individuals receive the right support and resources at the right time and place. Mesa aligns staff from the County of Renfrew Emergency Services, Community Services, and Development and Property Department, with community organizations and allied agencies, to coordinate services and navigate pathways that address individuals’ health, social, cultural, and community needs.
Through a 2024 contribution agreement from Health Canada’s Substance Use and Addictions Program awarded to Mackay Manor, Mesa is expanding and introducing new community outreach services including care coordination and peer support. These were added to the existing Mesa addictions worker and community paramedic services. By expanding and introducing new services, Mesa endeavors to center Indigenous cultural healing in care journeys and strives to provide compassionate, flexible, and low-barrier care to Renfrew County.
Through this collaborative approach, MESA helps connect individuals to health care, social supports, and community services, while working toward a healthier and more resilient community.
